Description

Vampires are ancient undead of terrifying power. They were once mortal but now exist as immortal hunters of the night, sustained by the blood of the living. They retain human appearance but with pale skin, red eyes, and elongated canine teeth.

Special Abilities

Double Energy Drain: Each hit permanently drains 2 experience levels.

Regeneration: Vampires regenerate 3 hp per round.

Charm Gaze: The vampire's gaze functions as a Charm Person spell. Targets save vs. magic at −2.

Shapechange: A Vampire can assume the form of a giant bat or dissolve into gaseous form at will.

Summon Creatures: A Vampire can summon 10–100 rats or bats, or 3–18 wolves.

Weapon Immunity: Only magical weapons or silver weapons can harm a Vampire.

Create Vampires: Humans drained to death by a Vampire rise as Vampires under the slayer's control.

Turn Undead: A Cleric may attempt to turn Vampires, though only powerful Clerics can do so.

Weaknesses

Repelled By: Garlic, a mirror held up to it, or a holy cross will repel a Vampire.

Destroyed By: Exposure to sunlight destroys a Vampire instantly. Immersion in running water destroys it. A wooden stake driven through the heart while it sleeps in its coffin destroys it.

Native Earth: A Vampire must sleep in a coffin filled with earth from its native land. It cannot rest or recover without access to this coffin.

Tactics / Encounter / Notes

Vampires are cunning and ancient. They prefer to use their Charm Gaze before resorting to combat, acquiring thralls who will protect them. They will retreat to gaseous form if reduced to 0 hp, flowing back to their coffin to regenerate over 8 hours. Destroying the coffin (and the native earth) prevents this retreat.

20% chance the encounter is at their lair.

Treasure

Vampire lairs contain Type F treasure — the accumulation of centuries of predation.
