Class Abilities

Spellbook

Magic-Users record their spells in a spellbook. They begin with a three 1st-level spells: Read Magic, one rolled randomly, and one chosen. See Arcane Spells for more details.

Memorization

Spells must be memorized from the spellbook after 8 hours of rest and 1 hour of study. Casting a spell erases it from memory until re-memorized.

Learning New Spells

To learn a new spell, the Magic-User must:

  1. Obtain the spell (from a scroll, another caster, or research)
  2. Spend a number of weeks studying the spell equal to its level
  3. Succeed at a Chance to Know Spell Roll based on Intelligence

Spell Research

At any level, a Magic-User may attempt to create a new spell of any level they may cast. Cost is 200 sp × spell level (×10 if no labratory is available) plus 1d4 × spell level, and requires 1 week × spell level of research. Additional costs and components are determined by the referee.

Potion Brewing

At 7th-level a Magic-User may brew magical potions. This requires an Alchemist's facility and costs half the price of the potion. The time to brew is 1 day per every 50sp in brewing price. Brewing for more than 100 days out of a year requires a Save vs. Poison to resist the effects of Potion Sickness.

Scroll Crating

At 7th-level a Magic-User may scribe scrolls. This costs 50sp per level of spell, and requires a full day per level of spell. There is always a 20% chance that the scroll is non-functional. Scribing scrolls for more than 30 days increases the chance of failure by 20% every 30 days.

Magic Item Recharging

At 7th-level a Magic-User may recharge a magic item. This requires the casting of a the appropriate spell on the item, which restores a single charge.
